UNHEIMLICH

Collaboration with Mariana De Alba for the Magazine RUMOR

The German word “Unheimlich” (from “Heim” which means “home”), refers to the terrifying feeling of something that we find sinister while at the same time: familiar.
Through a series of photographs from brutalist housing buildings, the artist Inés Vachez aims to portray the unsettling feeling of familiarity deployed by these massive structures, showcasing the duality between the coldness of their appearance and the fact that they are, after all, homes.

The dizzy collaged figures of the artist Mariana De Alba portray the hypothetical inhabitants of these buildings. These ghosts are sinister familiar faces from old photographs found in flea markets around Germany. Their presence next to the building adds to the feeling of eerie commonness.
